For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Prayer

Christ Our Hope, in life and in death, we cast ourselves on your merciful, fatherly care. You love us because we are your own. We have no good apart from you, and we could ask for no greater gift than to belong to you. Amen.

Sinners who are fallen are in need of being redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.   That we need the blood bought work of Jesus to redeem us from our bondage, from our idolatry, from our sin because we’re fallen individuals.   So, we know that about individuals.   That the Bible makes it very clear as it says in Romans Chapter 3, “That through the redemption in Christ Jesus we have been justified by His Grace”.   So, we see that.

Well, what do we mean when we say that the rest of creation needs to be renewed?  It says in Romans chapter 8, “That all creation needs to be set free from the bondage of decay”.   It also says in Colossians chapter 1, “That in Christ and through his death, and blood; by his death and blood that all things (that is assuming all of creation) will be reconciled.

What does this mean?   Well, we know that individuals have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.   We also know that all things in creation which are fallen; the natural world, culture, everything related to all things in creation are also fallen.   As we look at the big story plotline of redemption, we see Creation, Fall, Redemption and consummation or restoration.

And what we find is that in Jesus Christ through his death, there is the already but not yet entrance of this work that is happening in the new creational age.   So, what we have is that through his death and resurrection, which validates the payment that he has made for the debt of our sins; that during that moment, we see this already aspect of what God is doing in renewing everything in the world, but not yet fully consummated until he returns.   So, we find this is: that at the very end in the New Heavens and the New Earth, when the New City, Jerusalem, descends from heaven, what we find is a place there where we will be able to see the consummated restored picture of all of creation.

So, this means that in our response to this that we have to make sure that we are careful in recognizing the tension between the already and not yet.   Already, yes, through the blood death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.   That these things in the world; all things in creation are being renewed.   But yet at the same time, know that it’s not fully restored.

So, there is a tension there and we have to make sure that we’re not overly triumphalistic in thinking that all renewal has happened or by our own work that we can bring about this sort of restoration.   But at the same time, we are not to be escapist.   In other words, that we would say that everything about the world is so fallen and so decayed.   Because we know that through the death and resurrection of Jesus; that this new creational order; we see that the groaning of creation has now found this answer in the work in life of Jesus which will be fully consummated in the New Heavens and the New Earth

Historical Commentary by
John Bunyan

Who is John Bunyan?

Jesus is a Redeemer, that is his name; he came into the world on this very business, to redeem his people, to redeem them from all iniquity (Titus 2:14), from this present evil world, from our vain conversations. He hath shed his precious blood to purchase us, we are bought with a price (1 Cor. 6:20). We are none of our own, we are his, the purchase of his blood; and we may be confident that he dearly loves us, for he dearly bought us; and if he had not dearly loved us, he would never have given himself for us (Gal. 2:20). That was the highest testimony of his love; he loved us, and washed us from our sins in his blood (Rev. 1:5). He will redeem us from the wrath to come.
